The animals had lost their habitat in western Kenya and there were only 130 individuals left at Soy Ranch. The ranch was being sub-divided to resettle squatters. Jock and his wife brought back two giraffe calves, Daisy and Marlon to raise at their home in Langata, Nairobi. Thus began a programme for breeding giraffe in captivity. Their home remains the site of the centre to date. The couple then registered the Africa Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) in the United States to raise funds towards conservation. In 1983 the fund raised enough funds to build the centre. In the same year, the centre opened its doors to the public and groups of students. The centre aims to educate the public on the country’s wildlife and environment.
